Governor Larry Hogan signed a bill on Friday, March 18, suspending the fuel tax in the state in the wake of record high gas prices with the average being $4.21 per gallon. The bill suspends the collection of the tax, which is $0.36 per gallon, for up to 30 days.
"This bipartisan action will provide some relief from the pain at the pump and it is possible because of the prudent fiscal steps we have taken, which have resulted in a record budget surplus,” Governor Hogan said. “This is, of course, not a cure-all, and market instability will continue to lead to fluctuations in prices, but we will continue to use every tool at our disposal to provide relief for Marylanders.”
This all comes after both the House and Senate unanimously passed to approve the emergency gas tax holiday just a day before, WBAL reports.
The governor also submitted a supplemental budget to fund the suspension on Thursday, which is expected to cost nearly $100 million.
